To Guard You in All Your Ways: The Archangels on These Stone Walls
When I wrote "A Priest and His Wounds: Padre Pio Under Investigation" last week, I listed the five posts on These Stone Walls that I am most glad to have written. One of them was a post written at this time last year entitled "Angelic Justice: Saint Michael the Archangel and the Scales of Hesed." It was about the historic and symbolic meanings of Saint Michael the Archangel's sword and scales often depicted in icons bearing his image. It was an important post, and as a result of it we added to the TSW Home Page Saint Michael's image and the famous prayer for his intercession penned by Pope Leo XIII.If I had extended my "glad I wrote it" list just a little further, it would also have included a post about another angelic figure, "Saint Gabriel the Archangel: When the Dawn from On High Broke Upon Us" published on TSW (and lots of other places) during Advent last year. Many readers found the history behind Saint Gabriel's appearances to Mary and to Zechariah the priest to be fascinating. That post also briefly discussed a third angelic figure named in Sacred Scripture, Saint Raphael the Archangel, a pivotal figure in the Book of Tobit.Re-reading these two angelic posts might be a good way to commemorate the Feast of the Archangels celebrated by the Church this week (September 29) as well as the Feast of the Guardian Angels (October 2nd) even though the Sunday liturgy takes precedence in the Church's liturgical calendar. I'm very glad to have written these two posts. They have deeply felt meaning for me and for many TSW readers. Please join us in honoring the Angelic Presence of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael at the two links below.
"For to His angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot." (Psalm 91:11-13).
